A thorough inspection of window damage looks at both sides of the unit, since evidence visible only from the exterior, only from the interior, or only under particular lighting conditions can each tell part of the story. Exterior evidence typically includes impact marks on the frame, cladding, or glass, damage to screens, and any debris lodged in tracks or weep holes, while interior evidence can include water staining on sills or surrounding drywall, condensation patterns suggesting a compromised seal, or operational problems such as a sash that no longer closes fully. Because interior and exterior evidence are gathered from opposite sides of the same wall, a documentation approach that treats them as a linked pair, rather than as separate unrelated observations, tends to produce a more complete picture of what is happening at a given opening.

Photographing damage systematically, working room by room or elevation by elevation and using consistent reference points such as a tape measure or color card in the frame, produces documentation that can be reviewed and compared later by anyone involved in the claim, including someone who was not present at the original inspection. Wide shots that establish the location of a window within a room or on a building elevation, paired with close shots of specific damage, together give a more complete and useful record than close-up photographs alone. Labeling or logging each photograph with the room name, elevation, and window identifier at the time it is taken avoids confusion later, particularly on a property with many similar windows where photographs alone can otherwise be difficult to sort accurately.

Raking light, meaning light directed across a surface at a low angle rather than straight onto it, is a widely used technique for revealing dents and surface irregularities that are difficult or impossible to see under flat overhead lighting or direct sun. This technique is commonly applied to metal window components, aluminum cladding, and painted surfaces where subtle deformation might otherwise be missed during a routine walk around a property.

Chalk testing, in which sidewalk chalk is rubbed across a suspected impact area and then wiped away, can help highlight dents in metal surfaces by leaving chalk residue in the low points of a deformation, making faint damage more visible in photographs. This method is a supplement to, not a replacement for, direct physical inspection and measurement, and its results should be interpreted alongside other evidence rather than treated as conclusive on their own. A moisture meter, applied to wood sills or trim where water staining is visible, can likewise supplement a visual inspection by indicating whether elevated moisture is currently present, which is useful information when evaluating whether a stain reflects an active or a historical condition.

Consistent, methodical documentation matters because window damage assessments are often revisited later in a claim, sometimes by a second inspector, an appraiser, or an umpire who was not present for the original walk through. An appraiser relies on this kind of physical evidence, gathered directly during inspection and supplemented by photographs and measurements, to reach an independent conclusion about the scope and cause of window damage, while questions of coverage remain with the policy and the parties to the claim.
