Overhead garage doors tend to draw most of the attention in a storm damage inspection, but many garages also include a separate pedestrian door, sometimes called a service door, that allows entry without raising the larger overhead panel. This service door is functionally similar to an exterior entry door, typically steel, fiberglass, or wood, and it is evaluated using the same material specific considerations that apply to any other exterior door, including how each material responds to dents, finish damage, and impact from hail or wind driven debris. Many service doors also include a small window or lite, which is subject to the same glass evaluation approach used for other exterior glazing, and a storm door or screen door mounted over a service door introduces yet another independent layer of components to inspect.

Because garage service doors are often less visually prominent than a home’s primary entry door, they can be overlooked during a walk around inspection, particularly when they face a side yard or sit behind a fence or landscaping. A systematic inspection should include every exterior door on a property, not only the most visible ones, since a service door facing the direction of an approaching storm can sustain damage comparable to or greater than more prominent doors that happened to be more sheltered by the building’s orientation. Attached garages with a service door leading directly into the home, and detached garages with a service door facing a yard or alley, present different exposure profiles worth noting during an inspection, since the surrounding structures and landscaping at each location can shield or expose the door differently.

Overhead garage doors themselves present distinct evaluation considerations tied to their sectional panel construction, tracks, rollers, and springs. Individual panels can dent from hail in a pattern similar to what appears on other exterior metal surfaces, and because overhead doors are assembled from multiple identical panels, a manufacturer or dealer can sometimes supply replacement panels rather than requiring full door replacement, provided the specific panel profile and color remain available and provided the remaining panels are not also damaged in a way that would leave a mismatched appearance across the door.

Weatherstripping along the bottom and sides of an overhead door, along with the seal between panel sections, degrades over time from repeated opening and closing and from exposure to sun and cold, and identifying whether this wear is storm related again depends on finding a specific, localized mark consistent with an impact event rather than distributed general deterioration. Hardware including springs, cables, and rollers is generally not damaged by hail directly, though operational testing after any door panel damage is a reasonable part of a thorough evaluation, since a bent track or panel can affect how smoothly the door operates even when the underlying spring and cable system remain undamaged.

An appraiser evaluating garage door and service door claims applies the same combination of direct inspection, manufacturer information, and comparison to damage patterns found elsewhere on the property that is used for any other window or door claim, working toward an independent, well documented figure for repair or replacement. Coverage questions related to these components, as with any other part of a claim, belong to the policy and the parties involved.
