Window damage claims are not limited to frames and glass. A functioning window depends on a collection of smaller components, including screens, cranks and operators on casement and awning units, sash locks, balances that counterweight double hung sash, and weatherstripping that seals the moving parts against air infiltration, and each of these can be damaged independently of the larger structural elements around it. A thorough inspection accounts for all of them rather than focusing solely on frame or glass condition. In many claims these small components represent a meaningful share of the total repair cost once every affected window on a property is counted, even though no single item is individually expensive.

Screens are perhaps the most commonly damaged small component in a hail or wind event, since their light mesh and thin frame offer minimal resistance to impact. Fiberglass mesh, the more common modern material, tears relatively easily under direct hail strikes, while aluminum mesh, still found on some older or higher end screens, tends to dent or bow rather than tear outright. Screen frames themselves, typically extruded aluminum or vinyl, can bend at the corners or pop loose from their retaining spline, sometimes becoming separated from the window entirely during high wind. Some screens are also removed by homeowners for cleaning or storage before a storm and may not be in place at the time of an event, which is worth confirming during an inspection rather than assumed either way.

Operating hardware such as casement cranks, multi-point lock mechanisms, and balance systems inside double hung sash pockets can be affected by impact even when the visible damage nearby looks minor. A crank mechanism struck directly by hail may bind or fail to fully close the sash, and a balance system can be knocked out of adjustment if the surrounding frame flexes under a forceful impact. Testing operation, not just visually inspecting for marks, is an important part of evaluating whether these components were affected. Spring balance systems, block and tackle balances, and constant force balances all behave somewhat differently when disturbed, and an inspector familiar with these variations is better positioned to judge whether a given sash’s resistance or looseness reflects damage or simply the expected feel of that particular balance type.

Weatherstripping, the compressible seal that closes the gap between a moving sash and the fixed frame, degrades naturally over time from sun exposure and repeated compression, so distinguishing storm related weatherstripping damage from ordinary wear again comes down to looking for a specific, localized mark consistent with impact rather than generalized flattening or cracking distributed evenly around the unit. Locks, latches, and other hardware finishes can also show impact marks or paint chipping that should be evaluated alongside the larger components.

An appraiser evaluating a claim that includes these smaller components applies the same standard of direct physical inspection and testing used for frames and glass, documenting condition and function component by component to reach an independent scope of repair. As with all elements of a claim, whether a specific component’s damage is covered under the applicable policy is a question for the policy and the parties, not for the appraisal process.
