Steel, fiberglass, and solid or engineered wood are the three materials most commonly found in residential entry doors, and each carries a different physical relationship to hail and wind-driven debris. A steel entry door typically consists of a galvanized steel skin over a polyurethane foam core, and that thin steel skin can dent from a hail impact much the way an automobile hood or a metal roof panel can, sometimes even from hailstones smaller than those needed to damage other exterior components, because the steel gauge used on residential doors is relatively light. Many steel doors also include decorative panel embossing, and a dent located within or adjacent to an embossed line can be harder to identify visually than the same size dent on a flat panel field, which is another reason a physical, close-range inspection matters more than a general visual survey from a few feet away.
Fiberglass entry doors are molded to replicate wood grain texture and are generally more resistant to denting than steel, since fiberglass tends to distribute impact energy across the molded panel rather than deforming at a single point. That does not make fiberglass immune to damage; sharp or higher velocity impacts can chip the surface finish or, in less common cases, crack the fiberglass skin itself. Wood entry doors respond differently still, showing compressed grain, splintering, or finish cracking at the point of impact rather than a smooth dent. Solid wood doors can also react to seasonal humidity changes by swelling or shrinking slightly, which affects fit and operation independent of any storm event and should be considered when evaluating whether an operational problem is related to impact damage or to ordinary seasonal movement.
Distinguishing genuine storm-related dents from pre-existing wear requires close attention to the door’s finish and to how light reflects across the panel surface, since many dents are difficult to see under flat lighting and become obvious only when raking light is used during a physical inspection. Dent density and distribution should generally be consistent with hail damage documented on other metal surfaces at the same elevation and exposure, including gutters, downspouts, mail slots, and light fixtures, when those comparisons are available.
Finish damage is a related but distinct question from structural dent damage. A steel door’s factory paint can chip or crack at the point of a dent even when the underlying steel deformation is minor, and touch-up paint rarely matches factory finish closely enough to be invisible on a prominent, frequently viewed surface like a front entry door. Whether finish damage alone justifies full door replacement, as opposed to touch-up repair, is a scope and cost determination based on the extent of visible damage and accepted painting and refinishing practice for the material involved.
An appraiser reviewing entry door damage inspects the door’s material, finish, and hardware directly, compares findings against damage patterns elsewhere on the property, and applies accepted construction cost data to reach an independent figure. Coverage determinations, including whether cosmetic finish damage is treated the same as functional damage under a specific policy, are left to the policy language and the parties to the claim.
