Aluminum clad wood windows pair a wood interior, valued for its insulating properties and ability to accept stain or paint, with an exterior aluminum skin that resists weathering without the maintenance a painted wood exterior would require. The cladding is typically roll formed or extruded aluminum, finished with a baked-on enamel or a fluoropolymer coating, and mechanically fastened or adhered over the exterior wood surfaces. This combination is common in higher end residential construction across the Upper Midwest, where exposure to sun, moisture, and temperature swings makes low maintenance exteriors attractive. The wood core is typically visible only on the interior face and along the sash edges, while the exterior cladding wraps the frame and sash exterior surfaces, so a single unit can present two very different materials depending on which side is being examined.

Hail striking an aluminum clad window tends to produce dents in the cladding rather than the splitting or compression damage that would show on bare wood. Because aluminum cladding is relatively thin, dents can appear even from hail sizes that would not damage a heavier gauge material, and the dent pattern often mirrors what is found on aluminum gutters, downspouts, and siding trim on the same elevation of the home. Comparing dent size, density, and distribution across these different aluminum surfaces is one of the more reliable ways to establish consistency of impact across a property. Because the cladding is a formed shell rather than a solid extrusion, its gauge can vary slightly by manufacturer and even by product generation, which is one reason two aluminum clad lines exposed to an identical hail event can show measurably different dent depth and frequency.

Cladding damage is largely cosmetic in the sense that a dent alone rarely compromises the window’s ability to keep out air and water, but that does not mean it is inconsequential. Aluminum cladding is a finished, visible surface, and industry practice generally treats functional and cosmetic damage as worth addressing separately from questions of whether repair is possible. In many cases the cladding cannot be repaired without full sash or frame replacement, since manufacturers typically do not sell replacement cladding as a standalone part, and re-cladding in the field is not a widely practiced repair method. Where the wood substrate beneath a dented section of cladding is exposed or compromised, moisture intrusion becomes a separate concern that a physical inspection should note, since trapped moisture behind an intact-looking cladding surface is not something that can be assessed from a visual review alone.

Matching also becomes a consideration once one or more units on a wall are damaged. Aluminum clad wood window lines are produced by manufacturers in specific colors, profiles, and cladding gauges that can change between production runs, so a replacement unit ordered years after original installation may not match neighboring units in exact color or profile. Evaluating whether replacement of an entire wall’s units is appropriate, as opposed to selective replacement of only the damaged units, depends on the physical evidence of what actually was hit and on manufacturer information about the specific product line involved.

The appraisal process focuses on this physical and technical evidence to reach a defensible figure for the amount of loss. Determining whether cosmetic dent damage to cladding is itself a covered loss under a particular policy is a coverage question that rests with the policy and the parties, not with the appraiser.
