Ridge and hip caps are the shingles installed along the highest horizontal line of a roof and along its sloped corner edges, finishing off the field shingles below and covering the joint where opposing roof planes meet. Unlike field shingles, which lie relatively flat against the deck, cap shingles are bent over the ridge or hip and exposed to wind and sun from multiple directions at once, which affects both how they wear and how storm damage on them is typically evaluated.

Cap shingles can be purpose-made products designed specifically for ridge and hip application, often sold to match a manufacturer’s architectural shingle line, or they can be cut from standard three tab shingles, a common older practice still used in some markets. Because they are bent at the ridge line rather than lying flat, cap shingles experience more direct wind exposure than field shingles, and manufacturer wind warranties frequently specify particular fastening patterns, adhesive requirements, or minimum nail counts for cap installation that differ from the field.

Purpose-made cap shingles are generally thicker and pre-bent at the factory to reduce cracking along the fold line, an advantage over field-cut caps which can develop stress cracks at the bend over time, particularly in colder climates where the asphalt becomes less flexible during winter months. Some manufacturers also specify a minimum ambient temperature for installing cap shingles for this reason, since bending cold, stiff shingle material over a ridge can crack the mat even during correct installation.

When examining ridge and hip caps after a hailstorm, inspectors generally look at the exposed portion of each cap shingle for the same signs used to evaluate field shingles, granule displacement, bruising that is soft to the touch, and fractures in the mat beneath the granules, while also accounting for the fact that this location sees more direct sun and wind exposure over the life of the roof, which can accelerate general wear that is sometimes difficult to distinguish from storm-related impact without a close, hands-on inspection. Ridge caps installed over a ridge vent, a continuous exhaust vent running along the ridge line, add another layer to this evaluation, since the vent itself, typically a low profile plastic or metal baffle covered by the cap shingles, can also be damaged by hail or wind and needs to be inspected as a distinct component from the shingles covering it.

Because cap shingles are a relatively small quantity of material compared to the full roof field, they are sometimes proposed for spot replacement even when the rest of the roof is not being replaced, though matching an exact shingle line and color that may have weathered differently than new material is a practical consideration in that scenario. Whether cap shingles are replaced independently or as part of a full roof replacement generally follows from the extent and pattern of damage documented during inspection, together with manufacturer guidance on repair versus replacement for that specific product, and the resulting scope is worked out between the parties to the claim based on those facts.
