Drip edge is a narrow strip of formed metal installed along the eaves and rakes of a roof, and despite its small profile it performs several distinct jobs at once. At the eaves, it directs water off the roof deck and into the gutter rather than letting it wick back under the shingles and along the fascia board. At the rakes, the gable ends of the roof, it stiffens the exposed edge of the deck and shingles against wind uplift and gives water a clean point to drop away from the structure instead of running down the fascia and soffit.
The material is usually galvanized steel or aluminum, formed into an L or T shaped profile, and it is installed in overlapping sections along the roof perimeter, typically fastened every eight to twelve inches. At the eaves, drip edge generally goes down before the underlayment so that water shedding off the underlayment lands on top of the metal and drains into the gutter. At the rakes, common practice places the drip edge over the underlayment, which better protects the edge of the deck from wind-driven rain along that more exposed vertical edge. Shingle manufacturer instructions and code references such as the International Residential Code address this sequencing directly.
Overlaps between individual drip edge sections are typically two to three inches, and the sections are meant to be lapped in the direction of water flow so that runoff moves over the joint rather than into it. Color coatings applied to drip edge, usually a baked on enamel finish matched to the shingle color or the gutter color, are largely cosmetic and do not affect the metal’s structural or water shedding function, though a coating that has chalked or faded can sometimes help estimate the relative age of the roof edge detail during an inspection.
Drip edge did not appear as a nationally referenced code requirement until relatively recently in residential construction history, and its adoption varied by jurisdiction before that. Many homes built decades ago, particularly across the Upper Midwest, were finished without any drip edge at all, with shingles simply overhanging the deck edge by an inch or so. This creates a recurring question in roof claims: when a roof without drip edge is replaced for storm damage, adding drip edge along the eaves and rakes is often treated as a code-driven upgrade rather than a like kind and quality replacement, since it was not part of the original construction.
From an inspection standpoint, drip edge is checked for wind damage such as bent or lifted sections, for hail-related denting, and for whether it is present at all versus simply absent from an older roof. Fascia board condition nearby, including rot from long-term water intrusion where drip edge is missing or undersized, is a related but separate observation, since that deterioration develops over years rather than during a single storm event. How code upgrades, missing components, and storm damage are treated within a given claim depends on the policy language, applicable building code adoption in that jurisdiction, and the agreement of the parties, none of which the roof inspection itself determines.
