The visible portion of a chimney, the masonry stack rising above the roofline, tells only part of the story, because the flue liner running inside it does the actual work of containing combustion byproducts and protecting the surrounding structure from heat transfer. Flue liners come in several forms: clay tile liners assembled in sections during original construction, cast-in-place liners poured as a monolithic sleeve, and metal liners, typically stainless steel, installed as a retrofit when an older liner has failed or when a chimney is being converted to serve a different type of appliance. Each liner type has a different failure mode and a different repair pathway, which matters considerably when a claim involves both exterior storm damage and questions about interior chimney condition.
Clay tile liners are especially prone to cracking from thermal shock, which occurs when a rapid temperature change, such as a chimney fire or an unusually hot flue gas event, causes the tile to expand faster than it can accommodate without stress fracturing. Because these cracks are inside the flue and not visible from the exterior, evaluating their condition typically requires a video camera inspection performed by a chimney sweep or masonry contractor certified through an organization such as the Chimney Safety Institute of America, which trains and certifies technicians in these inspection methods. Storm-related events, such as a lightning strike traveling through a metal cap and into the flue, or a falling tree limb that dislodges tiles near the top of the stack, can sometimes be documented this way even when the exterior masonry shows no obvious sign of impact.
Metal liners introduce a different set of considerations, since they are typically insulated with a ceramic wrap and connected to the appliance below with specific fittings rated for the appliance type, whether that is a wood-burning fireplace, a gas furnace, or a water heater vented through a shared chimney. Damage to a metal liner from a falling object or from corrosion caused by condensation in an improperly sized flue is evaluated against the manufacturer’s installation specifications rather than against general masonry repair standards, since the liner is a manufactured product rather than a site-built masonry assembly.
Because interior liner damage is not always connected to an exterior storm event, and because liner deterioration can also result from normal use, age, or an appliance that was not properly matched to the flue size, distinguishing storm causation from pre-existing condition often requires the same kind of camera documentation used in routine chimney sweep inspections, interpreted alongside the exterior damage pattern. A flue that has served an oversized appliance for years, for instance, can accumulate excess condensation that deteriorates a clay liner from the inside out, producing cracking that looks superficially similar to thermal shock damage but traces to a chronic sizing mismatch rather than any single event.
Whether liner repair or replacement is included in a given claim, and how policy language treats interior versus exterior chimney components, is a coverage question for the policy and the parties rather than for the appraisal process, which focuses on quantifying the amount of loss once the scope of covered damage has been established.
