Hail leaves marks in places most people never think to look. Gutters, downspouts, window screens, air conditioner fins, and painted metal flashing all tend to be softer than a shingle’s mineral surface, and a hail strike on these materials often produces a small, distinct dent or a spatter mark where the granular coating or paint has been disturbed at the point of impact. Inspectors sometimes refer to this collectively as spatter, and it functions as corroborating physical evidence when evaluating whether hail activity occurred at a given property.

On downspouts and gutters, hail impacts typically appear as shallow dents with a consistent, rounded shape, sometimes with a visible loss of paint or a slight discoloration at the point of contact. Aluminum fins on an outdoor air conditioning condenser are especially sensitive to hail because the fin stock is thin and soft, and a hailstorm can leave a dense, uniform pattern of bent fins across an exposed unit. Vent caps, exhaust hoods, and other painted or coated metal accessories on a roof can show similar marks. Wood trim, fascia boards, and window screens can show comparable impact evidence in certain conditions, though these materials weather and age in ways that require more careful comparison to distinguish storm impact from ordinary deterioration. Because these materials are softer and more uniform than a shingle surface, damage on them is often easier to read consistently than granule loss on asphalt shingles, which can be harder to distinguish from ordinary weathering.

The value of spatter evidence comes from corroboration rather than from standing alone. A pattern of consistent hail impacts on soft metal components, paired with granule displacement on the shingles and a plausible weather event for the claimed date, builds a more complete picture than any single indicator by itself. Spatter marks can also help establish rough relative size and, in some cases, an approximate direction of impact based on which side of a fin or vent cap shows the damage, which can be compared against wind direction data from the storm in question.

Documenting spatter marks well is largely a matter of consistent field practice. Photographing each impact point at a consistent distance with a scale reference, such as a coin or a small ruler placed next to the mark, allows a later reviewer to judge size and shape without relying on a description alone. Some inspectors circle or otherwise mark identified impacts with chalk or tape during the inspection so the pattern across a component is visible in a wider photograph, then remove the markings afterward. This kind of methodical documentation matters more in disputed claims, where the physical evidence may be reviewed by several people who were not present for the original inspection.

Not every mark on soft metal traces to hail. Mechanical damage from tree limbs, foot traffic during other repair or maintenance work, and normal wear on older gutters and screens can all produce similar-looking dents, which is why an inspector experienced in distinguishing these causes, combined with dated photographs and a broader review of the roof and surrounding property, produces a more reliable conclusion than isolated spatter marks reviewed on their own.
