Static roof vents, commonly called box vents or turtle vents because of their low, rounded profile, are one of the most frequently referenced components in hail damage inspections, and for a practical reason: they are made of relatively soft, exposed plastic or thin metal, mounted on the highest and most weather exposed parts of the roof, and their condition after a storm often provides some of the clearest physical evidence available on the entire property.

These vents work by allowing warm, moist attic air to escape passively through an opening cut in the roof deck, typically near the ridge, with the vent housing itself covering the opening and preventing rain and snow from entering while still permitting airflow. Plastic box vents are usually molded from a UV-stabilized polymer, while metal versions are typically galvanized steel or aluminum, and both types are fastened to the deck around their perimeter and integrated with the surrounding shingles in a manner similar to any other roof penetration.

The number and sizing of static vents on a given roof is generally governed by an attic ventilation calculation based on square footage of attic floor area, typically balanced between intake ventilation at the soffits and exhaust ventilation at or near the ridge, a ratio referenced in most building codes and shingle manufacturer ventilation guides. A roof with too few or undersized vents may show more pronounced condensation or heat related wear over time, a separate consideration from any single storm event but sometimes relevant background when evaluating overall roof condition.

Because plastic and thin metal vent housings are softer than asphalt shingles and sit fully exposed at the top of the roof slope, hail impacts often leave more visible and more measurable damage on them than on the shingles nearby, showing up as circular cracks, punctures, or dents with a diameter and spacing that can be compared to hail size data for the storm event in question. This comparison, checking vent damage alongside other soft metal components such as gutters, downspouts, and window screens, is a widely used method for corroborating that hail of a damaging size actually occurred at a specific property, distinct from simply noting cosmetic marking on shingles that may or may not affect their functional performance.

That said, vent condition is evaluated on its own physical merits rather than assumed from the condition of surrounding shingles or vice versa, since a plastic vent housing brittle from age and sun exposure can crack from routine foot traffic or from hail too small to affect the shingle field, and conversely a newer, more UV-resistant vent might show only minor marking even where shingle damage is more significant. Photographing each vent from multiple angles, measuring impact diameters where visible, and noting the vent’s material and apparent age all contribute to a documented record. As with other roof components, the inspection establishes what is physically present and its condition, while how that evidence factors into repair or replacement decisions is a matter the parties to the claim work out under the applicable policy.
