Roof valleys tend to generate more discussion during claim inspections than almost any other single detail, partly because they concentrate water flow and partly because damage in a valley is not always as visually obvious as damage on an open roof slope. When hail strikes a roof, the impacts on a valley can be partially obscured by the angle of the slope, the overlapping shingle courses, or the metal surface itself if an open valley is present, which means a careful, close inspection matters more here than almost anywhere else on the roof.
One recurring question is whether a valley needs to be fully reconstructed when hail or wind damage is found nearby but not conclusively within the valley itself. Because valleys handle concentrated water flow, most roofing contractors and manufacturer guidelines treat them as a continuous system rather than a location where individual shingles can be spot repaired the way they sometimes can be on an open roof plane. A test square or measured sample area within the valley, examined for functional hail damage such as fractured mat or exposed asphalt rather than simply cosmetic marking, is a common method used to assess whether the valley shingles or metal have sustained damage that affects performance.
The steeper effective slope where two roof planes converge, and the way sunlight and shadow fall across a valley differently than across an open field, can make impact marks appear more subtle or more pronounced depending on the time of day and angle of inspection. For this reason, valleys are often examined more than once, or from more than one angle, before conclusions are drawn about whether observed marking represents functional damage or simply surface wear consistent with the roof’s age.
A second question involves matching. If a roof has an aged open metal valley in a discontinued color or a woven valley constructed with a shingle product no longer manufactured, replacing only the damaged portion may not be physically possible without altering the water shedding characteristics of the valley or introducing a visible seam. This is a practical construction matter distinct from, and evaluated separately from, questions about whether the underlying damage itself is covered under a given policy, which remains a matter for the policy and the parties.
Underlayment condition beneath the valley is a further consideration, since felt or synthetic underlayment exposed to years of concentrated water flow can degrade even where the shingles above it appear intact, and self-adhered ice and water barrier membranes used in valleys in colder climates have a service life that is generally not indefinite. When a roof inspection identifies valley damage, documenting the construction type, the extent and pattern of any impacts, the condition of adjacent metal or shingles, and the availability of matching materials gives the parties to a claim the physical facts needed to reach their own conclusions about scope. The inspection itself establishes what is present and what condition it is in; how that translates into a repair or replacement decision is worked out between the owner, the contractor, and the insurer under the applicable policy.
